Two days after the national team was eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 16, Luis Enrique was fired as Spain’s coach and was succeeded by Luis de la Fuente on Thursday.

After a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time, Spain fell to Morocco 3-0 in a penalty shootout.

The Spanish soccer federation expressed its gratitude to Luis Enrique but stated that it was time to “start a new project” in order to maintain the progress the coach had made in recent years. It claimed that the modification was carried out on the advice of its sporting officials.

De la Fuente, 61, a former left back for Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla, assisted Spain’s U-19 team in 2015 as they won the European Championship, and the U21 team in 2019.
